Busi Trecias hides itself down one of the many narrow streets that make up Vilnius’ Old Town. I went there with three friends on a Wednesday evening, and I’m not even sure I’ll ever be able to find it again. Its name means “Lucky Third” and is said to date from the last years of the Soviet Union when Gorbachevs crackdown on alcoholism mean that bottles of vodka would only be sold to groups of three or more!
From outside it’s a small building with an equally small sign to indicate what it is. Walk through the door and you find an old-fashioned inn in a small room. The stone floor hosts a handful of tables and in the center of the room there is a large supporting pillar with a shelf around it to rest your drink on. There is plenty of standing room and you can also sit at the bar which faces the door as you enter. It, like the furniture, is very solid wood.
The walls are rough plaster and are decorated with little glass-covered frames containing old bottle-tops, and melted bottles and glasses. The lighting is very low and is mainly provided by the candles on the tables. Upstairs is similar and has its own bar. But the evening we were here it was reserved for a private party.
We found a table near the bar and took a look at the beer menu. Busi Trecias is listed in many tourist guides as a microbrewery, which is slightly misleading. They do offer two brands of their own, but the vast majority of beers available are the same as in any bar in Vilnius. I tried a Busi Trecias Tamsus. This proved to be a dark full-bodied beer with a rich, malty taste. I don’t know if it was actually brewed on-site or elsewhere but it’s their own brand and was very good.
It may not provide a full range of specialist beers, but Busi Trecias does offer a large menu of beer cocktails. I didn’t try any but they looked interesting…and more than one looked like you might regret it the next day!
To go along with our drinks we went for that stalwart of Lithuanian snacks, the fried bread stick with garlic and cheese. These were also pretty good, and came in a generous portion. Both the bread sticks and the beer are a standard price for Vilnius at about 4.50 Litas each. There is also a full menu if you’re feeling hungry, but none of us were.
When we arrived at 7pm there had only been a handful of people but over the next hour more arrived. It never filled to the point where people were standing, but the tables did all get occupied. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and everyone seemed to be relaxed.
The toilets are worth a mention. The ladies and the disabled toilets are normal but the gents has an old fashioned “squat-and-drop” type. Why the gents has been singled out for this honour is anyone’s guess but it’s unusual to see these days. All three toilets were spotless but there was a lack of hot water. However it was good to see the disabled toilet, as these are not too common in Lithuanian bars.
We left Busi Trecias at about 9:30, after a pleasant couple of hours. It’s the perfect place for a cold weekday evening, but I also have a feeling it might be quite lively on the weekends. I’ll be back to find out.
