From the outside The Ugly Duckling looks like a nice place to drop in out of the cold and have a few drinks. And it could be - the lights are down, the music is laid back and it's nicely decorated. A quiet place. The food is cheap by Icelandic standards and, while not stunning it's not bad either. Even adventurous in some ways (Indian Stew with Bananas and Mango anyone?). The problem is the staff. The evening we went the girl was not only unhelpful, she was straight forward rude and and gave the impression that we were an inconvenience to her. This was the complete opposite to the rest of my experience in Iceland. Personally when things cost as much as they do in Reykjavik I'd like at least some courtesy. Avoid it, there are plenty of friendlier places to go.
