You’ll spot the man swinging his tankard of beer outside Amatininku Uzeiga. The fact he’s doing this while sitting astride a beer keg - and that the beer keg in question is suspended above the front door - does makes it hard not to notice him.
Amatininku Uzeiga is excellently located in the heart of old-town Vilnius, just near the City Hall. It was popular with locals in the old Soviet days and retained that popularity through the first difficult years of independence. It has since thrived and is now a popular tourist spot.
The name roughly translates as “Craftmans Inn” and Amatininku Uzeiga tries to reflect a theme of traditional Lithuanian craftsmanship and rural life. It is a large premises broken into multiple smaller areas by strong wooden beams rather than full walls. This is combined with bright lighting to give a spacious feel.
The front area has a small bar at which you can sit for a drink, while the remaining spaces have wooden tables and chairs and upholstered benches. The walls are coated in rough, colourful plaster and are decorated with sheaves of wheat and old agricultural implements. Music is provided over a PA system and is primarily Lithuanian Europop there is one tv on which the sound is usually down.
The space available in Amatininku Uzeiga allows a large number of tables to be fitted in without it becoming cramped. You are always likely to find a good portion of them occupied but should not have too much trouble finding one to sit at. Your fellow customers are likely to be a mix of both locals and tourists of all ages. Some will be here for drinks only but the majority are likely to have ordered at least one traditional Lithuanian dish. Amatininku Uzeiga specialise in traditional Lithuanian food such as Cepelini and other potato-based dishes. For anyone who hasn’t tried them they are tasty but extremely heavy. The quality here is good but it’s definitely not the best in town. You can also get snacks to go with your beer and again these are good but not extraordinary. The Black Bread and Garlic sticks in particular could do with more cheese.
Beers available include Svyturys, Horn and Guinness, and there are also a range of spirits. These are slightly more expensive than elsewhere in vilnius at about 5.50 Litas for a half litre.
One of the talking points of Amatininku Uzeiga is the toilets. Situated beside the bar they require anyone of average height (and many below) to duck significantly when entering. In fact so low are the doors that the word Hobbit is one that often springs to the mind of a first-time visitor. But don’t worry, once past the door you can stand upright again. The toilets are clean and according to the signature list on the door they are checked regularly. You can tell the male from female by the straw voodoo-dolls attached to the doors.
This is not a bar for the impatient. The staff are generally students for whom this is a part-time job. This means they are more interested in chatting to each other than rushing to serve, and the service is extremely slow.
Amatininku Uzeiga is a nice bar in which to have a few drinks and some food in a relaxed unhurried atmosphere. It’s not a party pub and it’s not for those in a hurry. But if you’re looking for somewhere to relax and recharge the batteries for a while it’s worth a visit. Just look for the carving of the man on the keg.

An institution in Vilnius this is a surprisingly large premises that is designed in a traditional way. Lots of wood and traditional knick-knacks on the walls. It is a very relaxed place that is pleasant to waste a few hours in. The food is good (try the hot chocolate, which is seemingly not as good as it used be but still seemed excellent to me) and has an adequate range of beers. Perfect on a cold day for food, drinks or both.
