The smoke was so thick you could almost chew the tobacco. The customers were speaking loudly so they could be heard over the throbbing beat of the techno music which drummed and based its way across the room. It was 4 in the afternoon.
Pizza Jazz operate one of their pizzerias in the main street of Kaunas, and right next door they have this bar. I was looking for somewhere to kill an hour and stopped by the purple frontage broken by darkened floor-to-ceiling windows and a large neon sign declaring “Baras.” Depending on your state of mind it looks either intimidatingly rough or a disco bar...or some surreal mix of the two. Despite pictures of disco dancing Hells Angels running through my head I nevertheless pushed open the door and ventured in.
It was nothing like I had imagined. What I saw was a small square room with neither biker nor dance floor in sight. A red-brick, wooden-topped bar occupied a lot of space in the center of the room. This was very English in style, with a shelf above head height to store empty glasses. The same red brick of the bar was used for the main walls which were decorated with photographs from the American West, including portraits of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and others. A small Victorian type chandelier hung from the ceiling while old-fashioned lamps stood on the bar itself. But these were more for decoration than anything as the room itself was well lit and didn’t have any dark corners.
I sat at one of the tall tables which lined one wall and waited to catch someone’s eye. The far wall didn’t have any tall tables. Instead there were three or four shallow alcoves along its length, each just deep enough to contain a bench upholstered in red and white stripes. In front of each bench there was a low table and wooden chairs. In total there were maybe 12 tables in the room, along with stools at the bar itself. These were all occupied, and during my visit they remained so, a regular flow of customers ensuring that anyone leaving was quickly replaced.
I had plenty of time to notice all this as I waited for someone to take my order, but eventually a friendly waitress did come over. In addition to the usual Lithuanian beers Pizza Jazz also stocks Carlsberg, and a range of whiskeys and cocktails. Prices are average and a half litre of Svyturys cost 4 Lt.
Maybe it's because this is one of the only obvious bars on the main street but there didn't seem to be an average customer. Not at this time of day anyway. There were slightly more people in their 20s but there were also customers in their 60s. The one thing that most of them did have in common was a fondness for a cigarette, as any casual visitor to the smoke filled room would immediately notice.
As I took my time over my drink I considered how most bars have two personalities, one at night and one during the day. Pizza Jazz has one and a bit. It's probably a very popular and lively place at night, and it's potentially a good spot for a few afternoon drinks. But they need to change the music and add a bit of ventilation to clear the smoke.

Hello,
Pizza Jazz used to be my favorite bar in Kaunas long time ago, I can't say that any more after yesterdays visit there. I travel alot and don't spend that much time in Lithuania. This my vacation and I took my friends out for a drink. I was really looking forward to go back to Pizza Jazz and remember good times. When we arrived there it was busy inside wich is nice to see that many people. The waitress Irma droped the menus on the table all she said was good evening..... (lithuanian style) the we asked if they could make apple Marini the answer was no and we were told that do not order coctail, beause it was already after 10:30 pm us they are going to close at 11 PM sad..... I asked if we need to be outside by then - she said YES... and walked away. She came back about 5 mins later to take our order we asked for beer. It took her another 10 mins to bring it to us.... slow slow slow Ms. Irma.... where is the training???? (to Management PAULIUS and others) so we had 15 minutes to finish everything. Shortly after getting beer we got and the check.... very quick (good job, managers, on that part o o o ) and that's not it Ms. Irma served coctails to people sitting next to our table.... and that was 10:50 PM what happened to the rule after 10:30 PM about coctail policy? well I should mention that these people were speking English... good for them. (managers, she is deliverin wow!!!! A+) Very disapointed with this experience and I don't think I will ever go back there. But if you decide to go there HAVE fun and avoid this girl Irma .... blond witress, and make sure you talk english otherwise forget about everything. Thank you - Andrius, Lithuania andrius22, Nov 9, 2007 |
