Luxembourg has a lot of Irish bars. Though I've never actually looked at the figures myself, I have been told that it actually has one of the highest number of Irish bars for its population of any country in the world. Oscar Wilde's is one of the most popular.
The Grund is the area just below the plateau, and running along the river. Oscar Wilde's is situated at its entrance, just across the bridge from the public elevator. A small gate leads to a terrace and the bar itself. This is a small room that is at a maximum 4 metres wide by 5 long, with a bar to your right. At the bottom of the room a doorway (from which the door has been removed) leads to another, slightly longer, room. This gives the bar as a whole an L shape. There is also a room upstairs, though it is often hired for private parties.
The decoration is typical of most Irish bars outside Ireland, with lots of old Guinness signs and posters of Irish writers on the walls. The bottom room has an open fireplace which gives a nice warm feeling on cold winter evenings. So while it's unmistakeably an Irish pub, it's not a themed one, and doesn't overdose with road signs to Dublin and bicycles on the wall. Or pretend to be a Connemara cottage.
Given its size, Oscar Wilde's gets busy quickly and on weekends in particular you are likely to find it's standing room only. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it goes to a lot of effort to provide entertainment. A regular traditional music session is especially popular and anyone with an instrument or a note in their head is welcome to join in. All major matches are shown on TV, and it's the base for two darts teams.
Oscar Wilde's is also a popular spot for parties, and the upstairs room in particular is often hired out as, in the summer, is the terrace. On the last time I visited there was a group celebrating a birthday and they filled the whole front bar by themselves. They had a free bar and stamped everyone's hands to identify them…unfortunately they were a bit too fast when I tried to sneak my hand in!
The regular menu at Oscar Wilde's covers the usual hot options of burgers, omelettes, and paninis as well as cold choices such as salads and smoked salmon. There is also a different special each day which can cover anything from an all-day breakfast, to fish and chips, or a roast. The prices are reasonable and the burgers (which are all I've tried) are good. It's only served during specific hours though.
Oscar Wilde's has only been open for two years (there used to be a different bar on the same site) but in that time it seems to have established itself as one of the main pubs in Luxembourg. I've been there a few times, though my last attempt coincided with its closure for a months holiday. I've always had a good time.
If you want a no-nonsense Irish pub where you're almost guaranteed to find a crowd enjoying themselves, Oscar Wilde's fits the bill in Luxembourg.
