It seems there was a shortage of brick in The Hague a few years back. At least that’s the conclusion one could draw from a visit to The Fiddler. This is an English microbrewery designed exactly as you would expect an English microbrewery to be designed…with large volumes of unvarnished, distressed and aged wood. All floors, bars, tables and staircases are wood and the only variety seems to be the old posters and metal advertising signs on the walls.

Originally named The Fiddler & Firkin it was part of the Firkin chain of English-theme pub. But after that chain collapsed The Fiddler was bought by a local man and reopened under its present name. It is a large and popular bar with a regular clientele and its own selection of beers.

When you enter The Fiddler the first thing you see is the bar, partly obscured by an extremely large staircase in the middle of the room. To the right a raised area, like a low stage, looks onto the square outside. In the early evening the tables here are reserved for those intending to eat, but for the rest of the time it is available to all comers. An electronic quiz machine nestles under the stairs, surrounded by a couple of tall tables.

At the back of the room, there are two swing doors facing onto another large staircase which leads up to the toilets and the upstairs bar. The toilets are clean and regularly checked. The upstairs bar contains less furniture than the downstairs but does have the magic ingredient of three pool tables which are very popular.

Being a microbrewery The Fiddler stocks its own beers as well as some occasional guest ones. The beers are primarily English-style cask-conditioned ales along with a stout and pilsner. There are also regular guest beers which change throughout the year. While the microbrews are okay, I personally found them to be lacking something. They are nice but just don’t seem to have the body or complexity of taste that other microbrews I’ve tried around the world have had. You can try them out with a taster tray that gives you the opportunity to find the one you like best. Prices (about 4 Euro a pint) are no more than you pay for a major label beer elsewhere in The Hague.

The food selection is good. Solid options such as burgers, chips, tacos and steaks dominate and the portions are large. The average price for a main course is about 9 Euro, while snack are about 4 to 5 Euro. The kitchen serves until 9pm most nights.

The Fiddler is particularly popular with the large expat community in The Hague. But it has not been packed at any time I’ve been there, and the atmosphere never seems to fully get going. This is not to say it is empty or boring. There is usually a good crowd and a buzz of conversation but it always feels to me like the hour before the party really gets going.

In short The Fiddler is a pub that tries hard to be something special but doesn’t quite make it. It’s a pleasant, lively place to waste some time but ultimately it’s not somewhere you’re likely to remember when you look back on your life…or rush back to The Hague to visit.

Sex Not Specified I don't care what anyone might say about The Fiddler but for me and my husband of 8 years it's the only pub to be in The Hague. In our teen years we used to go there every Fridays and Saturdays and it's the place we met. We love that pub, it's so laid back, you can just be yourself and chillout at the end of a long week. - Mariam & Colin, Netherlands

Male One of the better pubs in The Hague (which admittedly isn't saying a whole lot) this isa typical micro-brewery style - lots of wood. Like most micros it also has good food. Very popular with expats it's a good spot to see matches.
