Luxembourg is a funny place. The streets often look deserted but behind the apparently closed doors of the bars you’ll find large groups of people enjoying themselves. Scotts is located in the Grund, close to the public elevator. It’s on the river, and has a small patio which is popular during the summer, but only used by the brave or foolhardy in winter. The result is that, at 4:30pm on a Saturday in February, Scott’s appears closed and you could easily pass it by. But push open the door and you’ll find a very busy bar.

Scott’s could best be described as “slightly English” in decoration. The bar is dark varnished wood with a shelf above it for glasses. The walls too are decorated with wood to half their height. From there to the ceiling they are plaster and decorated with antique beer signs and mirrors. The room itself is a U shape which loops around the central bar. Tables rim the room, while a dartboard takes up a lot of space at one end and is in almost constant use.

Scott’s has been going strong for 15 years and by now it has a slightly aged feeling. Little nicks in the wood here and there and, most noticeably, stuffing poking out from rips in some of the stools. But overall it has more of a lived-in feeling than a neglected or run-down one. It seems to be popular with all of Luxembourgs different nationalities and on any visit you will hear a variety of languages and accents.

Presumably it’s because of this international mix that sport doesn’t feature largely. Unlike most pubs which go out of their way to show various matches on big screens, the two TVs in Scott’s always have their volume turned down. If the match you are interested in happens to be on then you can watch it, but the rest of the bar will probably not be joining in.

The music selection is laid-back rock from artists like Dire Straits, Pete Yorn, Bob Marley and Radiohead. The volume is above background noise but is low enough to allow easy conversation. The exception to this cosy atmosphere is weekends when the upstairs hosts a DJ. The sounds are much more upbeat then, and this attracts a younger crowd than normal.

Scott’s looks like it should do a very successful food trade but in fact they offer a very limited selection. What they do offer tends mainly to be quick and easy snacks. On the last visit RatePubs made, they had a pizza baguette for €3.80. This turned out to be a frozen version that was slightly overdone when cooking. It’s something to fill a hole, but not recommended for the main meal of the day. However they do stock a good range of beers both on tap and from bottle. The prices are slightly expensive even for Luxembourg and a pint of Leffe will set you back €5.40.

After 15 years Scott’s has become a Luxembourg institution. It is a warm comfortable place to have a few drinks at any time, while on weekends the option of going upstairs to the DJ offers something to those feeling a bit more energetic. Its location makes it easy to get to, (and get home from) and the mix of nationalities makes it a good spot to meet people. Just don’t be put off by the apparently empty premises if you call in the winter.

Sex Not Specified Great pub which is always busy on weekends. Bustling downstairs and a DJ upstairs. Great atmosphere and good selection of beers. - Jack, USA
