The business cards on the ceiling were turning browner by the minute, the peanut shells were crushed underfoot, and the karaoke singer tried gamely to be heard above the bustle of conversation. It was a regular night in For Sale.

Despite a weird name For Sale is a nice lively little pub just off Vaci Utca. Directly facing the market, this is a bar that is easy to find. And one worth visiting, even if it’s only to see if it’s for you (and it’s not for everyone).

Describing For Sale can be a bit tricky. If you can imagine a western-theme bar without all the cowboy gear then you have it. Lots of wood. Replica Colts and Winchesters behind the bar. And peanuts all over the floor. In fact For Sale seems to do go through as many peanuts (which are free) as beer.

The ceiling is very low and when you combine this with the huge quantity of cigarettes people in Budapest smoke, you get a room in which you can almost see the business cards, tickets and other mementos which customers have stuck all over the ceiling turn brown in front of your eyes.

There is usually a singer at one side of the room, singing to a karaoke backing. Surprisingly the music tends to be middle-of–the road pop and not country. The singers are fine but nothing to write home about. Given how easy it is to get chatting to people in For Sale I personally feel that the bar would benefit by eliminating the music as it interrupts those very conversations, but this is a minor criticism.

For Sale serves the usual range of beer to be found in Budapest and it is just as good as anywhere else in the city. The prices are similar to other bars as well, working out about €3 per pint. But if it’s cocktails you are after then this is not the bar for you.

Upstairs is a lot brighter than the downstairs and less smoky. You cannot just sit here for a drink though as the tables are exclusively for those who want to eat. We didn’t try the food but have been assured by locals that it is good and comes in large portions.

I’ve mentioned that For Sale is a friendly place where it is easy to get talking to people around you. Unfortunately this does not mean the staff. These I found to be rude and completely unfriendly. Trying to get anyone’s attention to get a drink is hard, and rather than ask you to move they will just push you out of the way. Maybe it’s part of the theme. Or maybe they don’t speak English very well. Or maybe they are overworked. Whatever the reason they are the main thing that lets the bar down as they make you feel that you are an annoyance rather than the reason they have a job.

So who should visit For Sale?
I think everyone should pay it at least one visit. However if you like a seat, dislike smoke, or like a friendly staff you won’t like it here. If you don’t mind those things and want a place where you can easily chat to the people next to you while having some beer then you might find yourself staying for longer than you planned.

Male This is one hell of a smokey but indivdual pub. Small room (I think there's an upstairs but not sure about that) which is covered in business cards, while the floor is covered in straw and peanut shells. But it has a good lively and friendly atmosphere. In fact the one complaint is that the night I was there they had someone singing to a karaoke machine. She wasn't bad but the general atmosphere of the pub would have been better without her as it's the sort of place you can easily get chatting to people around you. The staff aren't the friendlies but they did sem to be a bit rushed. The only food I saw was huge amounts of peanuts which were on the tables so I don't think they actually do any. In short it's a good bar if you like small friendly atmospheric places and don't mind them being hot and very smokey (which did get to me as I'm used to Irish smoke-free bars by now).
