There are times when you want a themed superbar with a large menu, and pre-packaged entertainment. There are other times when all you want is a friendly local pub. I walked into Pygmalion expecting the first and got the second.

From the outside Pygmalion (or “The Pyg” as it also styles itself) looks much larger than it really is. I pushed open the solid green doors, expecting a large theme-Irish bar with lots of space. What I saw was a small, narrow pub, with 4 or 5 people inside. A wooden floor ran down the center, bordered by a green carpet that had seen better days. The high walls were dark green, with unvarnished wood on the bottom half. They were decorated with Guinness mirrors, and brass plaques of Claddagh rings and other Celtic designs.

A large screen filled the far wall and a large tv was mounted on the wall just inside the door, facing a small raised area with three tables. I ordered a drink and asked if they were showing the Ireland-France rugby match which was starting an hour later. In a typical, local pub way, the barman not only told me the complete details for showing it but also told me that half the regulars had gone to Paris and the bar was going to be pretty quiet.

There were four other people in the bar when I arrived but it slowly began to fill as kick-off drew closer. By half-time the place was packed, making me wonder what it would have been like if everyone hadn’t gone to Paris! As I expected nearly all the customers knew each other and the bar staff and there was a lot of conversation and good natured banter. Not that it was all regulars. Apart from myself there seemed to be a few others for whom this wasn’t home. And the cheers that came from one corner whenever France scored against Ireland pretty much confirmed my impression.

The main bar of Pygmalion only holds about 12 tables but a door at the end of the bar leads to another small room with three tables and a stone floor. This also contains the cigarette machine and the toilets to which I paid a visit. Two urinals were out of order but they were clearly marked as such. All toilet paper, soap and other essentials were present, while the blue tiles were spotless.

Pygmalion is a true pub rather than a bar. It doesn’t serve food, so if you need something to eat go elsewhere first. Prices are average for Luxembourg and a pint of Magners cost me €4.50. The Pygmalion is also home to the Luxembourg branch of Glasgow Celtic Supporters Club (as attested by a prominently displayed signed jersey) and sport in general seems to play an important part in the bar.

The problem with a lot of local bars is that they are clannish and make newcomers feel unwelcome. Pygmalion is not one of those. If you’re in Luxembourg and want somewhere to watch a match or just somewhere to drink in a friendly party atmosphere be sure to check it out. It’s an Irish pub but not in a fake way, and definitely not in an exclusive one.
